Tradition and Intuition

Kazem Davoudian, Santur

Behrouz Jamali, Percussion

Recorded live at The Concert Hall of Center for the arts, Middlebury College (USA).

Text from Inside of the CD cover:

The word intuition is derived from the Latin word intueri - 'to see within'. Intuition provides us additional information that does not come from the analytical side of the brain, but this does not mean it is the the opposite of reason, In fact, intuition has often been described as a 'clear cold light' because it is pure reason. Intuition reveals a thing in its entirety, thus helping make sense of the world.

“Tradition and Intuition” is the spontaneous creative process of making music while it is being performed.

Text from back of the CD cover:

This fully improvised live concert is the practice of acting and reacting, of making and creating, in the moment and in response to the stimulus of our immediate environment.

This music is bringing our personal awareness "into the moment," and on developing a profound understanding for our actions. This fusion of "awareness" and "understanding" brings us to the point where we can perform with a range of options that best fit the situation, even if we had never experienced a similar situation and the result is the invention of new thought patterns, new practices and new structures.

This performance is based on traditional aspects of Persian Dastgah music, not repeating what has been performed before but understanding the idiom of it. The challenge is to overcome the danger of inflexibility and narrowness of a rhythmic improvisation with skills and yet feel comfortable and enjoy the music without significantly being cautious about following the traditional rules and forms.
